ISABELLA THEYS

ARTIST'S STUDIO & GARDEN
Welcome.
This is both my home and my workplace. The studio where I make my paintings is located upstairs, while the garden surrounding the house is managed as a permaculture garden.
My Story
The garden is designed according to sustainable principles. It combines vegetables, fruit, herbs, flowers, and perennial plants to attract pollinators, in a way that promotes biodiversity, healthy soil, and ecological balance. Rather than relying on intensive cultivation, the garden relies on the ‘no dig’ method and companion planting in order to let natural processes create a resilient, productive environment.
Every raised bed contains an integrated composting bin and water reservoir (olla). There is no use of insecticide or any type of pest control other than manual checking.
Although I spend a great deal of time in this garden, it is not the subject of my paintings. My work is not about vegetables, gardening, or nature in a literal sense.
The connection between the garden and my artistic practice is indirect. The garden functions as a sanctuary; a safe and private refuge from societal obligations. Gardening encourages careful observation, experimentation, long-term thinking, and a whole lot of patience!
All qualities that are equally important in the studio. But it also provides insight into color contrasts and combinations. Living and working in this environment has become part of my daily routine and provides the setting in which my work develops.
The vegetable garden is very new and in progress and supplies only a fraction of the household with fresh produce throughout the year and continues to evolve from season to season. Like the studio, it is an ongoing project that is never truly finished.
